GINGER-BELLA
Post-traumatic stress disorder Ptsd and Complex-Ptsd affect people from all walks of life. Trauma also affects our pets. It's a lesson Brian learned the hard way.
The Vatic Foundation's Golden Retriever and lucky charm Ginger-Bella has been Brian Nadon's Support Animal for five years. Brian and Ginger have been best friends for seven-plus years. Their relationship has evolved and continues to grow daily.
Ginger-Bella has witnessed the self-destruction, the suicide attempts, the tears, and the nightmares. Ginger understands firsthand the humiliation surrounding mental health in our society and how it prevents many individuals from seeking help. Ginger has watched her family get torn apart, alcohol problems taking lives, careers destroyed, and in some cases, watched as suicide was the only option to escape psychological and physical pain.
Ginger provides emotional support to Brian and anyone suffering from anxiety, psychological or psychiatric disability. There is no nationally or legally recognized training, certification, or identification standards for Ginger-Bella. Ginger performs no functional tasks. Ginger's job is to provide comfort, support and love.
Side-note about Ginger: During this awareness campaign, Ginger rides behind Brian in a chariot. But that doesn't mean she will not participate. On average, Ginger will walk or run 10-20km a day. Her best day was a 40km walk during a 60km Saskatchewan headwind.
